ADHD Q & A

What is ADHD?

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition that causes a combination of problems, including difficulty paying attention, impulsive behavior, and hyperactivity. Although diagnosis most often occurs in childhood, ADHD symptoms usually persist into adulthood.

Inattention and poor impulse control can lead to a wide range of problems, including poor performance at school or work and difficulty maintaining relationships. ADHD symptoms typically lessen with age, but some adults face challenges throughout their entire lives.

The team at Beautiful Mind Behavioral Health Services teaches strategies to effectively manage your ADHD symptoms. They offer a multifaceted approach to ADHD treatment, which may include medication management and psychotherapy.

What are the signs and symptoms of ADHD?

ADHD involves an ongoing pattern of three main types of symptoms:

Inattention

Signs and symptoms of inattention include:

  • Having trouble staying focused during tasks or play
  • Making careless mistakes at school or work
  • Losing things, such as toys or school supplies
  • Having difficulty following instructions
  • Appearing not to listen, even when spoken to directly
  • Being easily distracted
  • Hyperactivity and impulsivity

Signs and symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsivity include:

  • Talking nonstop
  • Being constantly on the go
  • Squirming or fidgeting while seated
  • Having difficulty waiting or taking turns
  • Interrupting others or blurting out answers
  • Acting without regard for consequences

Some ADHD symptoms are typical behaviors that wouldn’t normally cause concern. But when you have ADHD, these symptoms occur more frequently and persist longer than six months.

Does ADHD occur with other disorders?

Yes. According to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention survey, about six in 10 children with ADHD also have another behavioral or mental health disorder. This includes behavior or conduct problems such as oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), anxiety disorders, and depression.

The team at Beautiful Mind Behavioral Health Services offers holistic management for ADHD, with or without the presence of another disorder.

How is ADHD treated?

The team at Beautiful Mind Behavioral Health Services provides individualized care for children and adults with ADHD. They carefully evaluate your specific condition and recommend the best treatments for you. This may include neurodiagnostic testing to diagnose or rule out another condition that causes similar symptoms.

Standard ADHD treatments include medication management, behavior therapy, or a combination of both. If these treatments don’t work, the team at Beautiful Mind Behavioral Health Services may recommend external trigeminal nerve stimulation (eTNS).
